
Seven west Cumbrians have been named in the 24-strong Great Britain Young Lions squad to tour South Africa this summer.
Peter Cady and Matthew Huby of Wath Brow Hornets , Maryport pair Daniel Rooney and Steve Scholey, Kells duo Ross Gainford and Carl Lewis Wilson, , and Egremont’s Jack Murray jet out on May 29 to their base south of Johannesburg.
The Under-19s will take in five games on their 16-day tour at five different locations, before returning on June 13. Mark Robb, of Kells, will be assistant coach to Garry Schofield.
Lions manager Dave Roberts, said of the squad: “I see it as just reward for the commitment and hard work the players have shown for their respective clubs and counties. It’s a chance of a lifetime for these young men and I’m proud to be part of their achievement with BARLA.
“All these players are from the top drawer and oozing with class. Some will go on to enjoy a career in the pro game, for those who remain in the amateur ranks, I see it as just the start of their BARLA international career.”
